On January 31, 2012, a capacity crowd filled Cherokee Country Club to honor the 2012 Client Advisor Awards finalists and winners. Each year we honor Trusted Advisor and Client of Choice, and three winners within each category. While we shared the names of our winners immediately after the event, today we wanted to share the story behind the win for the Trusted Advisor Category. We will share the story of the Clients of Choice in a future email.
Nominations are accepted throughout the year for our 2013 Client Advisor Awards, so if you have a story to share, simply click here.
WINNER: LARGE PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FIRM
MCDERMOTT WILL & EMERY
It is a storyline straight out of a Hollywood movie—McDermott Will, the NYC-based law firm, huddles with its client during a worldwide bidding process for two iconic names in sports gear. Late in the game, the client backs away, decides the price is too high, but then—an oceanic flight and a change of heart. The client gets off the plane and says, “I have to have this business.” McDermott Will springs into action and the client wins the bid.
Oh, yes—and McDermott Will wins the 2012 Client Advisor Award.
It really did happen this way. McDermott Will & Emery, the international law firm with more than 1,000 lawyers, was contracted by Korean-based Fila to help them buy the company that manufactures Titleist and Footjoy products. It was conducted as an auction, a nerve-wracking process to all involved.
At one point, Gene Yoon, Fila’s CEO, walked away from the table and went home. But once off the plane, he changed his mind and gave orders to proceed. Upon receiving the go-ahead, David Goldman, lead attorney for McDermott Will, knew exactly what to do.
Jennifer Estabrook, Fila’s EVP Business Operation, explained, “David(Goldman) said you need to pay this and we need to structure the deal that way. He told everyone that it was risky, but here were the reasons it was a risk worth taking. He just cut to the chase and said, “This is what it’s going to take.” It was his industry insight that got us the deal.”
WINNER: MID-SIZE PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FIRM
TAYLOR ENGLISH DUMA, LLP
Good things come about when the right combination of skill, professionalism and a lifelong dream come together. That’s what transpired when the law firm Taylor English took on the young company Udoda as a client and helped them bring an app to market that teaches dyslexics to read. It also garnered Taylor English the 2012 Client Advisor Award. The dream belonged to Undoda’s founder, Bill Allen, a dyslexic who has spent much of his adult life developing teaching methods for other dyslexics.
With the arrival of the iPhone/iPad/app era, Bill realized he had an opportunity to broaden his reach. He now offers an iPhone app for $5/month called UndodaMultimind Games, developed with the help of software engineers, that teaches reading in a three-dimensional way using graphics, images, pictures and sounds.
For help on the business end, Bill turned to Jonathan Wilson at Taylor English. “We had worked with Bill before and so we knew his personal passion for the subject matter. Bill had an idea of how the app should work and look, but we needed to convert that knowledge into a document. And we couldn’t just use a template agreement,” Wilson said. On Udoda’s behalf, Taylor English hammered out an operating agreement, navigated security laws and worked with Bill on the financial goals, ensuring that all parties got a fair deal.
It was a mutually beneficial relationship. “Bill’s enthusiasm is infectious. It felt good to work on a deal with such altruistic goals. It was a personal honor to go with Bill on this journey,” Wilson said.
WINNER: SMALL PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FIRM
OrgPR
Say “recovery audit industry” to most people and you’ll get a blank stare. However, let Jean Avent, principal at OrgPR, talk about her client PRGX as “a company that brings creative profit discovery services to its clients. It’s the Sherlock Holmes of business. It goes in and finds profits for companies”—and then you’ve won people’s attention.
It also wins awards as when OrgPR won the 2012 Client Advisor Award.
From the very beginning with PRGX, Jean hit the ground running. She met with all senior executives one-on-one to do a communication audit. She talked with line people to get a sense of how the company was presently positioned. Finally, she did a global brand benchmark analysis evaluating how PRGX was doing in the media. Synthesizing all this information, Jean developed a PR program.
Alexandra Gobbi, Vice-President of Marketing and Communications for PRGX, said, “What I look for in a trusted advisor is, of course, experience in the field in which we’re hiring. But just as important—and maybe more important to me—is the ability to team up well with us. Jean is, literally, an extension of our marketing department. That’s how we view her.
“Very quickly, we came to trust her. We immediately saw that she got us. But then over time, she proved that she had our backs. We’ve involved her over and beyond her job as PR. In this regard, she is really a thought partner.”

On Thursday March 10th, 2011, the Chicago skyline served as the backdrop for a dinner hosted by Creative Growth Group. We gathered our Chicago-based clients and friends into the Signature Room on top of the John Hancock building for a dinner discussion focused on growing professional services. Our dinner guests included Managing Directors and Chief Marketing Officers from a number of leading accounting, public relations, legal, engineering and consulting firms. We asked two renowned marketing gurus to serve as first among equals at the dinner table to jump-start the conversation. The discussion lasted well past dessert, and we have included just a couple of top-line highlights of the evening’s discussion here. Serving as catalysts for the discussion around the table were:
